SAMTRAC MasterClass: Mining New, Now and Next in Mining HSE
9 Nov, 2022

South Africa is recognised as a world leader in the mining industry. The country’s rich mineral resources account for a significant proportion of the world’s mining production and reserves, making it one of the key players in this global industry.

However, while the mining industry is recognised as one of our most successful and thriving sectors, the role of miners is also considered to be one of the most dangerous jobs in the world. According to a study on the number of fatalities within the mining industry in South Africa between 2000 and 2021, in 2000, there were a disheartening number of 285 deaths. Although this number has dropped over the years, recent years show a disappointing increase in lives lost. In 2019, there were 51 total deaths recorded, and in 2020 and 2021, there were 60 and 74 deaths recorded respectively.  The safety and well-being of mining workers remain a great concern to both employers/companies, stakeholders and those looking at entering the industry, especially viewed through the lens of recent major mining incidents like the Jagersfontein Tailings disaster.

The Department of Mineral Resources and Energy remains focused on its goal of achieving zero harm within the industry. It was reported that there has been a 34% reduction in the number of accidents that lead to fatalities year-on-year in 2022. However, while the relevant departments and companies look at ways to improve the health and safety of mining workers, it is also important for those entering or currently in the industry to upskill and educate themselves on the best health and safety job practices. This is where our SAMTRAC Masterclass for Mining comes in.
