Driven Machinery Regulatory Training

The course provides learners an overview of the key requirements of the OHS Act, pertaining to safe use of plant and machinery, and how to implement and manage these.

On completion of the course, the successful learner will be able to safely operate and use a mobile elevating work platform (MEWP). The learner will be able to assess their work environment to establish any safety hazards to: prevent or eliminate such hazards and resultant losses conduct pre-inspection tests operate the MEWP in safe conditions.

On completion of this course, the successful learner will be able to understand the functions of a truck-mounted crane while using the crane in a safe and suitable manner. They will also be able to access support and emergency services, in the case of an incident or accident in the workplace.

The successful learner will be able to operate a battery operated, defined purpose lift truck. The learner is able to access emergency support and services, in the case of an emergency, while operating a lift truck. The person is also able to identify and classify the load, handle and move the freight, while operating the lifting equipment in accordance with standards and its performance capabilities. They are also able to monitor the fitness of the lift truck.

The successful learner will be able to operate a counter-balanced lift truck in a safe manner. They will also be able to conduct pre- and postinspections to ensure the performance of the lift truck. The learner will be able to handle the loading and storage of freight by using the equipment – and its accessories – in the required manner. They will also be able to access the emergency system and services in the event of an incident or accident.

The successful learner will be able to operate a basic purpose lift truck. They will also be able to access emergency support and services, in the case of an emergency, while operating a lift truck. The person is also able to identify and classify the load, and handle and move the freight, while operating the lifting equipment (in accordance with standards and its performance capabilities). The successful learner will also able to monitor the fitness of the lift truck.

On completion of this course, the successful learner will be credited with this unit standard, which means they can demonstrate an integrated practical and theoretical grounding in crane operations, according to safe handling and maintenance practices in compliance with crane manufacturer's and legislated standards.

The successful learner will be able to understand the functions, safety and suitability of the crane prior to utilisation in the freight handling industry. Learners are also able to inspect and record the operational fitness of the components of a crane, and be able to access available support systems and emergency services, in case of incidents and accidents while operating an overhead/gantry crane.

A learner accredited with this standard will be able to utilise the competencies acquired in selecting, utilising and caring for freight handling machinery and equipment, to positively add to operational efficiencies.

The person credited with this unit standard is able to use gangway signals by selecting the correct position and signal equipment according to operational requirements. They are also able to conduct continuous assessment of the lifting gear and evaluate the slinging methods to ensure safe operating practices.
