Building a Career in Safety

As part of our ongoing series profiling students who are studying SAMTRAC courses at Nosa College, we spoke with Nontobeko Ndlovu, a 43-year-old aspiring Safety Officer from New Germany. Sponsored by her employer, Ulubanzi Construction and Projects, Nonto is pursuing the SAMTRAC course to further her studies.

With a background in construction, Nonto – as she warmly introduced herself – recognises the importance of safety officers and safety representatives in the industry. “These kinds of careers in Safety are very important these days, especially in construction,” she emphasises. “There’s a lot of construction on the go and therefore a lot of opportunities, because each and every work environment needs to have safety officers and safety reps.”

Nonto’s passion for safety drives her pursuit of further education. “I pursued the Intro to SAMTRAC course last year, in September,” she explains. “Because of the nature of the work that I am doing, which is currently working within Safety and also admin, I wanted to advance my skills.”

Her hope is to continue to further her studies, branching into Safety Auditing. “My goal is to continue to further my studies, so that we can have internal safety auditing in our company as well,” she notes.

Nonto finds the SAMTRAC course through NOSA beneficial: “The way that NOSA has structured their courses is also beneficial for those of us who are working and studying at the same time,” she says.

With her commitment to safety and ongoing education, Nonto is an inspiration to anyone pursuing a career in occupational health and safety.
