What did it need?
Levi Strauss & Co realised that they needed to improve their handling of Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) issues across their operations around the world.
The popular American clothing brand knew that with legal requirements constantly changing and civil society demands continuously increasing, it was essential to integrate HSE management into their day-to-day processes.
After creating the Levi Strauss & Co Sustainability Operations team, the company determined that having knowledgeable staff members in all departments was essential if they wanted to proactively manage HSE risks. LS&Co needed a training course that could set HSE standards across their global operations.

The world’s leading course in occupational risk management in the workplace, SAMTRAC is available both online, through NOSA’s E-Learning platform, and as a two-week classroom-based course at any of NOSA’s branches around SA.
SAMTRAC was selected as the benchmark for HSE training throughout LS&Co’s global operations. SAMTRAC International meets the HSE requirements of LS&Co’s Restricted Substance Stewardship Programme (RSSP) and has been endorsed as the preferred HSE training course for all technical representatives within its supply chain.
The results
These courses have successfully upskilled 26 LS&Co employees in Asia, Europe, Africa, South and North America.
LS&Co works with a large number of suppliers worldwide and has also identified the need to improve HSE across its supply chain. In fact, NOSA has experienced a marked uptick in engagements with LS&Co suppliers as a result.
In 2014, LS&Co and SAMTRAC International worked together to customise the cost and delivery of the course to better suit individual supplier requirements. LS&Co launched an initiative to fund top performing suppliers, which resulted in an increased focus on HSE-related issues and improved their relationship with their suppliers. To date, over 22 technical representatives have successfully completed the SAMTRAC International course.
