In celebration of Youth Month, here are our top five safety courses young people are taking to set themselves up for a successful career in safety:
1. Driven Machinery Regulatory Training
This course teaches safety and compliance training for large machines and driven machinery aimed at regulatory requirements which are in line with the Driven Machinery Regulation. Course contents include how to operate a mobile elevating work platform, and how to operate a mobile crane, among others. These skills are extremely useful for working in industries where specialised driven machinery is core to the operations, and learners can easily upskill quickly from one course to the next.
2. SAMTRAC (Safety Management Training Course)
SAMTRAC is the gold standard in the HSE profession, providing training in safety procedures for employees in the Occupational Health and Safety sector, those who are safety officers, or those whose daily tasks have a direct impact on the safety of others, such as vehicle drivers and heavy-duty machine handlers.
It’s one of the most sought-after and comprehensive training programmes in the world, including South Africa.
Emergencies can happen anywhere, anytime. Equipping yourself with CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) and first aid knowledge can be a lifesaver. Our First Aid level 1 is the minimum required qualification for all workplaces in South Africa (as per the Occupational Health and Safety Act) and equips candidates with the basic principles of assessing an emergency situation, contacting the emergency services as quickly as possible, and while awaiting their arrival, candidates will be able to perform basic skills required to sustain life. The Level 2 course enables learners to provide primary emergency care (first aid) in response to an occupational risk-induced or any health emergency in their specific workplaces.
This course provides learners with the ability to identify, contain, prevent and extinguish different types of fires including how to operate basic firefighting equipment and how to perform basic firefighting procedures. These are handy skills as a fire safety officer.
5. Dangerous Goods Safety Training
Dangerous goods training applies to both storage and transportation of dangerous goods in accordance with national and international statutory requirements. In this training programme, learners are equipped with skills in chemical handling, conveying dangerous goods by road, spill training, controlling hazardous and dangerous goods and responding to and clean up of a spill. These specialised skills are useful in major manufacturing and industrial sectors.
6. Compliance
Understanding compliance is a key skill that’s versatile enough to be applied across all businesses and industries. SafetyCloud’s Industrial and Commercial Compliance Training educates learners on legislative, regulatory or policy requirements for their industry or specific job function. Our programme equips learners with an understanding of hazard identification and risk assessment, root cause analysis, and applying SHE principles and procedures. Courses are in person, via webinar or available as e-learning.
By investing in these safety courses, young people are able to gain valuable knowledge and skills as they chart a path in safety.
