Brent van Schalkwyk’s 3-Year Dedication and Continuous Learning Earn Him the Title of Top SAMTRAC Achiever, Showcasing His Excellence in Occupational Health and Safety
“I’ve always wanted a career where I can make a real difference, OHS is that space with growing local and global opportunities”
In this inspiring series, we explore the journeys of SafetyCloud’s top-performing students, delving into their experiences and insights into Occupational Health and Safety (OHS). Meet Brent van Schalkwyk, one of the highest achievers in SafetyCloud’s SAMTRAC qualification, as he shares his roadmap to a successful career in OHS.
After completing his matric in 2021, Brent took a gap year to explore his career options. He landed a job in retail, where he gained invaluable experience in teamwork, problem-solving, and critical thinking. However, he soon realised that he wanted a career that would allow him to make a more meaningful impact.
“I’ve always wanted a career where I can make a real difference,” Brent explains. “OHS resonated with me because it’s a profession that prioritises the well-being and safety of workers, while also contributing to a positive environmental impact.” With the increasing global focus on health and safety, Brent saw an opportunity to pursue a rewarding and challenging career.
From Uncertainty to Purpose
Brent’s research led him to SafetyCloud. “The quality of certification offered by SafetyCloud is unparalleled, and their practical approach to learning has given me the confidence to apply my knowledge in real-world settings.”
Brent’s OHS journey began with a course in Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment (HIRA), followed by the Safety Management Training Course (SAMTRAC). He also completed additional courses in Basic Fire Fighting, Incident Investigation, and First Aid. “I believe that OHS is a field that requires continuous learning and development. I’m committed to staying up-to-date with the latest trends and best practices.”
Brent’s advice to those considering a career in OHS is to first embark on a journey of self-discovery. “Understand your strengths, weaknesses, and passions. Develop a growth mindset, and be willing to learn and adapt. OHS is a dynamic field that requires creativity, problem-solving, and effective communication.”
He added that risk assessment and management, and knowledge of regulations and compliance are critical to the field. “To get those skills one should do more courses such as HIRA, Incident Investigation and Emergency Response courses. Also do research and educate yourself about other skills to improve them to be fully competent,” he added.
Sharing his thoughts on trends and developments that will shape the future of OHS, Brent said Artificial Intelligence; Robotics; Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG); and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) were areas to keep an eye on.
“We should question how we can manipulate artificial intelligence to get the best results for the Health Safety and Environment sector. For example, an Engineer who needs to have calculations done has AI tools that can do it perfectly without mistakes, keeping in mind that a good engineer can make mistakes as well. So we need to use the available tools there are so that we get the best results possible. As time goes on AI will be more efficient and proficient in what we do.”
He said we cannot talk about safety without referring to the Hierarchy of Controls. “This asks safety professionals to eliminate hazards first to reduce the risk of injury and illness. An efficient way to do this is by finding automotive processes to eliminate most hazards and risks without having a worker there to suffer injuries. We should contribute by learning about technology and provide others with training and oversight of new technology being implemented. A human element will always be necessary for technology to reach its full potential.”
Brent added that as the workforce shifts to become younger, the priorities of employees will change. “Younger generations such as Millennials and Gen Z want to work for companies that prioritise ESG and DEI programmes.”
A Future in OHS Education
Brent’s long-term career aspirations include educating and training future OHS professionals. “I’m passionate about sharing my knowledge and experience with others. I believe that education is key to creating a safer, healthier work environment.” He plans to pursue further studies, including the NEBOSH International Diploma and the National Diploma in Safety Management.
